Water filtration is an important process for purifying water and making it safe for drinking and other uses. There are several types of minerals that are used in water filtration due to their absorption and adsorption properties.
-
Silica: Silica sand is a common filter media used in water purification. It has a high particle retention capacity and is used in deep bed filters for sediment and turbidity removal.
-
Calcium Carbonate: Calcium carbonate is used in ion exchange filters to remove calcium and magnesium ions from hard water. It is also used in calcium filters to remove heavy metals from water.
-
Zeolite: Zeolite is a microporous mineral with a lattice structure that traps water molecules and other contaminants. It is especially effective in removing ammonium ions, heavy metals and other organic contaminants.
-
Glass: Crushed glass is used in sand and gravel filters for the removal of suspended solids and turbidity reduction. Glass can also act as an adsorption medium for the removal of organic contaminants and heavy metals.
-
Anthracite: Anthracite is a coal mineral used in water filtration for the removal of organic matter and chloramines. It is highly effective in removing organic compounds that cause unpleasant taste and odor in water.
Typically, these minerals are used in combination with other filter media, such as gravel, activated carbon, and other filter media, to create effective filtration systems that can remove a wide range of contaminants from water.
